The Daily 5 - Chapter 1

I've heard so many great things about the Daily 5 that I had to jump on board with this summer's book studies.  I thought that it may be just the push I need to read and research and try something new!

I'm linking up today with Nicole at Teaching With Style who is hosting the chapter 1 book study.

As I read the first chapter, the introduction, I thought to myself this sounds great...but could it really happen in my classroom?  Reading others' thoughts, it seems I'm not alone.  Mel D at Seusstastic Classroom Inspirations who is also hosting a chapter 1 book study (for first grade) said that she felt the same.  But her 1st graders proved her wrong, and she realized it was after all realistic.  I hope I find the same thing to be true!

One of my highlights from the first chapter was this quote.  "The first weeks of school are dedicated to launching the Daily Five and instilling literacy habits that allow for independent work with little or no teacher supervision."  My kiddos cannot work independently.  Well, they can work independently, but then they have to ask me if it's okay and if they're doing it right after they've done their work...634 times a day it seems like!  When I'm helping others this can be a serious problem!!  When I'm not helping others it can be a problem too :)  They lack the confidence it seems to trust their own work and their own ideas.  So I love the idea of fostering independent, confident readers!

I grabbed Nicole's freebie and thought about how I would like to see my own classroom change.  Take a look!

What changes have you seen in your classroom if you use the Daily 5?  What changes would you like to see if you're studying along with me?

  5. I'm a little worry about this. I'm moving from 2nd grade to 3rd grade. And also from one way to two way dual language, what means I might have 3 different groups pf kiddos coming to my classroom every day. So, I'm thinking I have to know this like the palm of my hand to be able to rotate smooth between all the groups. Anybody out there teaching two way dual language and doing daily 5?
